Sierra de Las Nieves walking areas

The Sierra de las Nieves is the most easterly natural park included in this guide. It is to found to the east of the Ronda – San Pedro de Alcántara road and stretches up to El Burgo in the north, Tolox to the east and Istán to the south. It is the highest of the Sierras in western Andalucia – the highest summit, Torrecilla, being 1919m.

Despite its height, the topography is not as severe and dramatic as is to be found in the Sierras of Grazalema or Libar and the terrain is less rocky , resulting in a form of walking a little kinder underfoot. Also, unlike the other sierras there are no villages and little habitation within the Natural Park, so the best introduction to the walking opportunities is to discuss the various points of access to the park.

For a visitor based in or around Ronda, the access from the Ronda-San Pedro de Alcantara road at km13 would be the most convenient. This leads to the recreational area at Quejigales which is an excellent starting point for many of the best routes in the park.

Alternative points of access are:
- From El Burgo, in the north, to the recreational area at Los Sauces
- From Yunquera, to the recreational area at Puerto del Saucillo
- From Torox, in the east
- From Istán, in the south to Puerto Verde

The upper slopes are generally bare and rounded, though the lower slopes to the west and north of the park are wooded and offer the best locations to view some exceptional samples of the rare pinsapo trees – without the restricted access that exists in the Sierra de Grazalema. Other vegetation includes other pines, some splendid old oak trees, and, particularly in the lower slopes to the south and east, in the valley of the rio Verde, the holmoaks often form impenetrable scrubland.

The principle peaks, other than Torrecilla, within the natural park are along the ridge going northeast from Quejigales - , Cerro Alto (1813m) and Los Enamorados (1775m) and, lower but often visible, the Peñon de Ronda(1297m). In the southwest corner are to be found the twin peaks of Alcojona (1497m) and Abanto (1512m) which offer fine views to the south and west.
