Walking routes close to Ronda

Routes in the Sierra de las Nieves

The Sierra de las Nieves offers some of the finest walking in southern Spain. Its wooded lower slopes (home to some of the finest examples of the rare pinsapo trees) give way to open and relatively easy moorland walking at the higher elevations. It is always a good choice for summer walking - the  higher elevations keep the temperatures more bearable and the wooded  lower slopes offer plenty of shade from the sun.

Access and accomodation can be a little restricting. There are few places to stay within the park itself and most of the walking routes start from access points a little remote from main highways. Those shown here start from Quejigales (access from Ronda-San Pedro road), Los Sauces (access from El Burgo) or Puerto del Saucillo (access from Yunquera).

Arroyo Fuenfria – Puerto Robledal – Alcojona – Llano de la Laguna

20 kms, 13 along tracks, 600m ascent.

This is a route which allows us to ascend to the peak of Alcojona from the Puerto del Robledal and continue down to the Llano de la Laguna, seeing some spectacular old pinsapo trees on the way. Unfortunately turning it into a circular walk is a little tortuous, the options being to walk 13 kms along driveable tracks (the option described here) or to attempt a steep and difficult ascent of some 500m from the Rio Verde.

La Fuenfria Alta – Cascajares

6 kms, 350m ascent.

A short route just to the south of the Sierra de las Nieves park which takes us up to the summit of Cascajares (1416m).

The starting point is Fuenfria alta. This is reached from the Ronda-San Pedro road (A-397) about 13 kms from Ronda – about 1 km after passing a layby area to the right with a couple of ventas look out for a sign to the left to the Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves. Take this exit and after about 3 kms look for a track going off to the right signposted to La Fuenfria. Continue along this  for 3.5 kms passing a farmhouse to the right (La Fuenfria baja) and continue until crossing a bridge over the Fuenfria stream where the track starts to rise more steeply. There are the ruins to our left of old miners cottages – there were magnesium mines here in the past. This is Fuenfria alta – leave the car somewhere around the bridge.

Los Sauces – Cueva del Agua- Los Enamorados - Puerto Hornillo Circuit

20 kms, 1000m ascent, Grade 3.

One of the great days walks in the Sierra de las Nieves - particularly if you are starting from close to El Burgo. The walk begins at the Area Recreativa de Los Sauces. This is accessed from El Burgo along a long track (13 km) which winds up the valley of the El Burgo river and then over El Puerto de la Mujer. Beyond this pass the track drops down to a junction where we bear right for a further 2kms until reaching a sign for the Area recreativa, where we turn left and continue for a further 400m. to the parking area. All the tracks are in good condition and driveable in all types of vehicle.  (Note if coming from the direction of Yunquera it is shorter to leave the main road 3 kms before El Burgo at a signboard for La Sierra de las Nieves, arriving at the same junction 2 kms before Los Sauces, where we turn left).
