Routes in the Genal valley

The valley of the river Genal is well known for its pretty pueblos blancos - or white villages. These are of moorish origin and usually occupy spectacular positions high above the river valley. It is excellent and relatively easy walking country - there is a network of ancient paths and tracks which connect the villages, usually by routes much more direct than the modern roads. However these are often steep and crisscross the river valley (and its tributaries) so a days walking in the area often involves plenty of ascent and descent.

Most of these routes are officially-designated PR (pequeño recorrido) paths so are marked and well documented. These can all be found in the publication (available in English) of Editorial La Serrania, entitled Serrania de Ronda, A Guide to Footpaths. This can be bought in bookshops and  many hotels. The routes shown here are really to complement these - filling in a few gaps and making suggestions for circular walks (all the PRs are one way).

Cartajima - Ronda

One way, 13 kms, 500m ascent, Grade 2

This is a PR route (PRA 221),  but is very badly waymarked and the current route (as described here) differs a little from that shown in the official guidebook.

The starting point is the road junction at the entrance to Cartajima village. If starting from the village go to the T-junction on the MA- 525.

Benalauria- Jubrique Circuit

18 kms: 900m ascent, Grade 3.

One of the finest walks that involves a crossing from one side of the Genal valley to the other. The village of Jubrique occupies a spectacular setting and offers some good choices for a lunchtime refreshment.

14 kms.    Ascent 800m.     Grade 2/3

A fairly easy route taking in three of the prettiest villages of the upper Genal valley. While it is entirely on good tracks/paths there is, as usual in the Genal valley a fair amount of ups and downs to cross the river valleys.

14 kms, 800m ascent, Grade2/ 3

A nice circular route linking two of the pretty villages of the upper Genal valley. The starting point is the village of Alpandeire.

Venta de San Juan – Jubrique- Genalgaucil Circuit

19 km.  Ascent 800m , Grade 3

A route taking in two of the prettiest villages of the lower Genal valley. Genalgaucil is often considered the prettiest white village of all and is something of an artists colony - with sculptures adorning every street corner. The start of the walk is the Venta de San Juan - where the road from Algotocin to Jubrique and Genalguacil crosses the river Genal.

Juzcar – Cartajima- Rio Genal Circuit

9 kms , 500m ascent., Grade 2

A nice short circuit between the villages of Juzcar and Cartajima, with the option to extend by going up and back to the village of Pujerra (an extra 4 kms there and back).

Pujerra - Igualeja

11 kms one way, 500m ascent, Grade 2.

This can be thought of  as a missing link among the network of PR paths that connect the villages of the Genal valley. It can be incorporated in long circular routes between villages of the upper Genal – e.g. Igualeja-Cartajima-Juzcar-Pujerra-Igualeja (23.5 kms) or Parauta-Cartajima-Pujerra-Igualeja-Parauta (25.5 kms). It is far from being a direct route – the road linking the villages is much shorter,  but has some fine views, particularly to the south where, on a clear day, the Rif mountains of Morocco are visible.
